Your Opportunity:
The Undergraduate Nurse Employee (UNE) supports Primary Care Alberta Public Health programs, including the provincial seasonal immunization campaign, while functioning in a learning capacity under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. UNEs assist in immunization clinic activities and provide designated nursing tasks appropriate to their level of education, competence, and experience. UNEs contribute to public health service delivery by supporting immunization clinics and community based initiatives in settings such as Community Health Centres, community outreach locations, mobile clinics, and client homes. This position provides undergraduate nursing students with supervised, hands on experience in community and population health practice within Edmonton Public Health. Casual staff may be assigned to work at multiple locations across the Edmonton Zone, including Edmonton and surrounding communities such as Leduc County, Strathcona County, St. Albert, and Spruce Grove. Orientation and required training are provided and typically occur in August and September.

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Primary Care Alberta (PCA) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.
Additional Required Qualifications:Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Check is required. Transportation to and from assigned work sites within the greater Edmonton area and surrounding communities is the responsibility of the employee. Applicants must be enrolled in an approved Registered Nurse (RN) education program and meet one of the following criteria: • Successful completion of third year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN program; or • Currently enrolled in the final year of an after degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN program. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for Undergraduate Nurse Employee status with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). The role includes variable physical demands such as standing or walking for extended periods, lifting up to 25 lbs, repetitive hand movements, and working in multiple clinic environments. Availability during peak immunization periods, including evenings and weekends, is required.
Preferred Qualifications:Completion of a preceptor led clinical placement or previous work experience in public or community health is an asset. Previous exposure to immunization practice and familiarity with Connect Care or other electronic clinical documentation systems are preferred.
