Your Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Manager of the Calgary STI Clinic and Safeworks Outreach, the Registered Nurse (RN) – Safeworks Outreach - functions in an expanded scope of practice within a harm reduction model. The RN will be expected to function in an independent nursing practice, conducting health assessments, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of Sexually Transmitted and Blood Bourne Infections (STBBI). This nursing practice is directed by the "AHS STBBI: Testing and Treatment Protocol", and under the direct supervision of the Calgary STI Clinic Medical Director/Medical Officer of Health. The RN will also be responsible for monitoring and interpreting laboratory results of the Safeworks Outreach clients, client counseling and education in the prevention of STBBIs, contact tracing and partner notification, and documentation in the client chart. In addition, the RN will be required to provide appropriate health care resources in collaboration with the client and establish and maintain relationships with various provincial health authority programs and community agencies to promote understanding of the STI program. The RN will participate in the STI program in education initiatives and the planning, integration, implementation, and evaluation of clinical practice and strategies to reduce STIs. Finally, the nurse will primarily work in an outreach capacity throughout the City of Calgary and provide STBBI outreach services to various internal and external communities, programs, and facilities for testing and treatment of STBBIs. Understanding the primary focus of the role will be to provide increased access to priority populations most at increased risk for acquiring an STBBI.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58/hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with PCA/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

A minimum (2) years within the past (5) years of experience with current and direct patient care within a sexual health program is required. Experience/lived experience in creating safer spaces for all people including all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions, those who identify as people of colour, Indigenous people, unhoused people, people who use substances or newcomers to Canada. Computer proficiency with complex programs and databases; documentation is completed in the Electronic Medical Records. Ability to manage complex clients with minimal supervision. Ability to think independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and demanding work environment. Ability to work alone. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). Ability to independently support a patient to the ground or sustain a patient in Trendelenburg position (lift/carry 30+ lbs. - waist to floor, floor to crown). Ability to handle periods of intense activity and multi-task throughout high-volume clinics, including moving throughout clinical spaces and outreach in the community up to a distance of 15km per shift. Ability to carry equipment such as for outreach (20-30lbs) and ability to carry equipment up and down stairs depending on the location/access of clinics. Ability to sustain periods of stationary activity. Ability to independently perform the skills of a certified BLS provider. Knowledge and understanding of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of certification in sexual health or related field. Current working knowledge of STBBIs, experience working with people disproportionately impacted by health disparities & various diverse groups. Experience in outreach. Experience providing trauma-informed, harm-reduction & stigma-reduction approaches to care. Experience in innovation and leading programs. References to back up soft skills in time management, efficiency, prioritization & accountability. NVCI training.
