Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Calgary STI Clinic, the HIV Designate Nurse (DN), contributes to improving the overall health of the public and individuals by providing HIV outreach support and services to people living with HIV (PLWH). The HIV DN is responsible for but not limited to the following: public health assessments, interventions, care coordination, and case management of PLWH. As well, as health assessments, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI), monitoring and interpretation of lab results, client counseling, and education in the prevention of STBBIs, fostering appropriate use of health care resources in collaboration with the partner notification, case management of clients testing positive for STBBIs, and establishing and maintaining relationships. The HIV DN also is required to collaborate with clinics, physicians, Indigenous communities, emergency/urgent care centers, and community agencies to promote wrap-around services for PLWH that required additional support to reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission. The HIV DN will support reducing barriers to healthcare services by providing linkages to HIV care and treatment support, clinical outreach services, preventative education, and support addressing the social determinants of health. Further to HIV outreach, the HIV DN will participate in outreach activities providing STBBI testing and treating services in the community and surrounding areas. Participating with the STI Clinic, the HIV DN will engage in clinical practices and strategies to reduce STBBIs and HIV transmission in the community. The HIV DN functions in an expanded scope of nursing practice that follows the “STBBI: Testing and Treatment Protocol” under the direction of the STI Medical Director and Medical Officer of Health.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58/hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with PCA/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum three (3) years within the past five (5) years of public health experience. A vehicle and a valid driver's license are required. Experience/lived experience in creating safer spaces for all people including all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions, those who identify as people of colour, Indigenous people, unhoused people, people who use substances or newcomers to Canada. Computer proficiency with complex programs and databases; documentation is completed in the Electronic Medical Records. Ability to manage complex clients with minimal supervision. Ability to think independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and demanding work environment. Ability to work alone. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). Ability to independently support a patient to the ground or sustain a patient in Trendelenburg position (lift/carry 30+ lbs. - waist to floor, floor to crown). Ability to handle periods of intense activity and multi-task throughout high-volume caseload, including moving throughout clinical spaces and outreach in the community up to a distance of 10km per shift. Ability to carry equipment such as for outreach (20-30lbs) and ability to carry equipment up and down stairs depending on the location/access of clinics. Ability to sustain periods of stationary activity. Ability to independently perform the skills of a certified BLS provider. Knowledge and understanding of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. Minimum two (2) years within the past four (4) years of experience in an STI Clinic/sexual health setting, however, experience relevant to nursing practice in the community sector will be considered. Experience with Indigenous communities, outreach work, HIV care, and harm reduction is an asset.
