Your Opportunity:
This casual RN position based out of Claresholm, also supports the communities of Vulcan and Nanton. The delivery of preventive and promotive measures includes vaccination, screening, referral, follow-up, education, and client advocacy. Public Health Nurses (PHN) are required to practice with a high level of autonomy in community settings with the ability to be self-directed and exercise independent nursing judgement. The PHNs role is to promote, protect and preserve the health of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in the settings where they live, work, learn, worship and play in an ongoing or episodic process. Collaborative work includes other health professionals and community partners, supporting capacity building approaches focused on client strengths and participation. The Public Health Nurse has direct responsibilities within a Population Health Model to assess key health determinants and respond to global, national, provincial and local mandates. Many of the responsibilities of the PHN are mandated by the Public Health Act and Communicable Disease Regulations. PHNS will advocate and engage in healthy public policy options to facilitate healthy living, incorporating the concepts of inclusiveness and the principles of community development. Public Health Nursing services may include: community and health assessments, development and evaluation of plans: consultation and facilitation appropriate to all developmental phases throughout the lifespan; program delivery and follow up: immunization and communicable disease prevention and control; client advocacy; fostering appropriate use of the health care system; facilitating cooperation and coordination amongst the many health and social service agencies; collection and recording of client based data, quality improvement and safety and risk management.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
Additional Required Qualifications:At least 1 year experience working as a Registered Nurse in any of the following areas; Prenatal, Labour & Delivery, Postpartum, Pediatrics, or Immunization across the life span within the last 3 years. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle in good repair for work related travel. Comfortable to drive-in all-weather conditions. Ability to lift/carry supplies up to a min of 30 lbs. Ability to raise arms to shoulder height in a repetitive movement and use fine motor hand coordination required for immunization. Ability to bend, twist, kneel and independently respond to emergency situations. Ability to independently perform the skills of a certified BLS provider. Ability to sit, stand for a minimum of 30 min. Ability to manage outreach sites that have no consistent ergonomic setup. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse clients from various cultures, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Proficient computer skills. Must be able to conduct contemporaneous electronic documentation at the point of care. Must be able to work independently and manage time in a fast-paced and stressful environment with minimal supervision. Able to make critical decisions and respond safely and quickly to situations/settings (e.g., anaphylaxis, frequent faints, post-partum depression screening, emergency response).
Preferred Qualifications:A minimum of 1-year current Public Health Nursing experience in Well Child Clinic, Postpartum Community Health Services or School Nursing within the last 3 years, preferred. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred; however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in a community setting will be considered. Current CNA Certification in Community Health Nursing. Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant.
