Your Opportunity:
The Indigenous Cancer Patient Navigator (ICPN) is a specialized oncology Registered Nurse (RN) employed by Primary Care Alberta (PCA) and working collaboratively with Cancer Care Alberta (CCA) as an integral member of the local multidisciplinary care team. This ICPN supports connection between Indigenous Peoples, their communities, and culture and the health professionals involved in their care. The ICPN supports First Nations, Inuit and Métis patients and their families to navigate the complexity of health care system across the care continuum—from first consultation through treatment, survivorship, or palliation. This role works closely with stakeholders to identify gaps in care and ensure timely access to services, community supports, and resources The ICPN builds strong linkages with community-based care providers, physicians, oncology specialists and other health professionals to support cancer patients within their local environments as well as tertiary or provincial level. At any point across the cancer trajectory, the ICPN will work in collaboration with the health care team to identify patient’s symptoms and concerns, and tailor interventions to address the physical, psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs. A core focus of the ICPN role is partnership with community and stakeholders-- including oncology teams, supportive care services, community-based providers, patient representatives and CCA to identify system gaps and develop strategies that improve access to services to better support Indigenous patients and their families across the cancer journey.
Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
Additional Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health care Providers (BCLS – HCP). Completion of CCA – AHS Cancer Patient Navigation course upon hire or within 3 months of accepting position. ICPN’s are expected to maintain their oncology competencies within their current clinical setting as required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex, fast paced clinical environment, including managing multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, and supporting patients and families experiencing emotional distress. Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous Communities or a strong understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
Preferred Qualifications:CNA Oncology Certificate (CONc) preferred. Preference given to applicants with recent oncology, palliative and navigation experience. Community, public health nursing, palliative, home care or ambulatory care experience is considered an asset. Fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
